This paper assesses the status of solid waste management on the Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands, particularly the landfill situation where most are full or overcapacity. There a limited number of recycling activities, such as baling of aluminium cans and small-scale composting, to help ease the situation but not enough.

This assessment, being done under the Atoll Waste Management Component of the Pacific Hazardous Waste Management Programme (PacWaste), aims to demonstrate the important of establishing an integrated sustainable solid waste management system in the Marshall Islands. It does this by outlining ways to expand on the 4R practices - refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle - to improve existing waste collection and disposal practices.
