Baseline Study for the Pacific Hazardous Waste Management Project - Healthcare Waste: Vanuatu

This report covers a review of data on the management of healthcare waste and its disposal, as part of a broader strategy of improving waste management in Pacific Island countries, and specifically to assist in establishing sustainable healthcare waste management. It presents findings of an assessment conducted for Vanuatu, including recommendations and a proposed implementation plan for each recommendation to achieve sustainable management of healthcare waste in the country.

Recommendations include the need for Vanuatu to:

  • Develop a waste management framework
  • Make available procurement of consumables (segregation and storage)
  • Provide a sustainable structured healthcare waste training programme to all hospital personnel and personnel from other stakeholders (e.g. government health and environment agencies)
  • Establish appropriate storage facilities
  • Improve treatment infrastructure such as disposal system
  • Provide appropriate personal protective equipment, in particular overalls/protective clothing, and eye protection for all waste handlers
