This case study, Economic Value of Ecosystem Services in Ichkeul National Park, Tunisia, aims to assess the economic value of ecosystem services provided by the Ichkeul National Park (INP), with the objective to increase awareness among decision-makers and users to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the different components of natural capital and biodiversity present within the park.
The Ichkeul National Park is located in North-East Tunisia. It occupies 12,600 ha, successively covering mountains (1,363 ha), Lake Ichkeul (8,500 ha), and swamps (2,737 ha). The lake and marshes have long been recognized as one of the main wetlands in the western Mediterranean basin. The aggregate economic value of ecosystem services is estimated at 6,270 million Tunisian Dinar (TD) for 2015. The value of regulatory services, such as flood protection and groundwater recharge, make up the majority of the value of ecosystem services (73%), while the value of on-site benefits (provisioning and cultural services) represent only 27% of the aggregate value. This assessment will strengthen knowledge of the site and increase awareness among decision-makers and users to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of the different components of biodiversity. This will also make it possible to reconcile the objectives of the INP with the expectations and aspirations of the local population.
