UNEP’s International Environmental Technology Centre (UNEP-IETC) is actively promoting gender mainstreaming in waste management, recognizing that the sector is shaped by gender roles and inequalities despite being perceived as gender-neutral. On 28 November 2023, UNEP-IETC held a webinar targeting policymakers and practitioners to better understand the intersection of gender and waste and how to integrate gender considerations into national waste management policies. The event highlighted the importance of empowering women—who are key actors in the sector—and featured speakers from Asia, Latin America, and SIDS who shared practical experiences and lessons on incorporating gender perspectives into policy and practice.
The lessons learned by each speaker are compiled in a case study for each country. These case studies offer practical insights and examples of how gender considerations have been effectively integrated into national waste management policies across diverse regional contexts, providing valuable guidance for policymakers and practitioners aiming to advance gender-responsive waste management.
