Viet Nam adopted a Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Action Plan in 2018 for the implementation of NRE-related SDG targets. However, a review of Viet Nam’s NRE-related SDG targets and indicators revealed a lack of coordination with social and economic targets as well as insufficient data collection and management at the national and provincial level. Therefore, guidance on improving policy coherence and data management was developed. The guidance suggests actions at national and provincial level:
- Coordinated policy response: Link and prioritise environment targets, and link NRE indicators to social and economic targets.
- Data informs management decisions: Link investment to environmental criteria.
- Professional oversight: Strengthen professional management and self-assess statistical quality.
- Technologies and sources of data collection: Monitor data collection effectiveness, increase third party data sharing and outsource data collection, and increase digital-based monitoring activities.
- Data sharing: Clearly advise provinces on data that can be shared.
