More Growth, Less Garbage

Organisation:

Waste generation is estimated to grow from 2.24 billion tons in 2020 to 3.88 billion tons in 2050.

This publication presents a picture of how waste generation could grow if the world continues along the current trajectory and how to consider changing that path. It also explores methods for decoupling waste generation, and thus consumption, from economic growth.

Five case studies are highlighted - from the US, Japan, the Philippines, Slovenia and Republic of Korea - to address different factors that drove decisions to reduce or divert waste. In evaluating these cases, the report suggests policy frameworks to change the current business-as-usual scenario.
