The installed capacity of renewable energy has increased across the globe since the historic Paris Climate Accords, with more countries adopting tender (auction) and bidding mechanisms to support international climate goals. Latin America and the Caribbean has also made progress in fulfilling its commitment to sustainable energy.
This report presents a summary of the most relevant findings from an extensive mapping exercise of energy sector practices in the region. It contemplates best practices grouped in five solution pillars to promote a just energy transformation in the region:
- Fostering competitive markets to support the region’s economic development
- Modernizing the power grid to improve power system efficiency and reliability
- Promoting distributed clean-energy resources to advance universal access and resilience
- Supporting integrated energy planning across sectors and countries to encourage renewable energies
- Strengthening regulatory harmonization and market design to foster regional integration

The Madre de Dios (MDD) region of Peru is a biologically and culturally diverse area that forms a key conservation corridor spanning 30 million hectares of protected areas in the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot, and connecting the Andean foothills with the Amazon. Prior to 2010, the construction of the interoceanic highway began. This road is an important economic corridor that crosses the Andes to connect ports on the Pacific coast with MDD as well as road networks beyond, all the way to São Paulo, Brazil.

This case study illustrates Guiding Principle 1: Strategic Planning and is part of a series of ten case studies which aim to inform the forthcoming wave of global infrastructure investment. Collectively, they specify and demonstrate how environmental, social and economic sustainability must be integrated right across infrastructure policymaking at the systems-level. The individual principles and case studies were developed via ongoing global consultation and inputs from experts and UN Member States, as part of implementation of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) Resolution 4/5 on Sustainable Infrastructure.
