This continuing professional development course is developed and run by a partnership between the Oxford University's Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE) and the Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GCAP). The course offers students the chance to develop the technical and leadership skills required to be a change maker in practical adaptation methods.

Programme

Now in its seventh year, the Academy presents a range of modules, case studies and exercises to bridge knowledge and application, theory and practice. The aim of the programme is to enable participants to develop a solid grounding in conceptual frameworks of vulnerability, climate impacts and adaptation, with a focus on the "how to" rather than "what is" adaptation. This challenging programme integrates the four modules over the course of two engaging weeks:

  • Navigating the adaptation landscape
  • Adapting the project cycle towards transformation
  • Champions and change-making; and
  • The business case for resilience

Targetted Audience

The programme is aimed at adaptation practitioners and leaders driving adaptation plans at all levels. Interaction with a diverse group, both in terms of nationality and discipline, is a key benefit of the programme.

Past participants have come from a range of backgrounds across the public, NGO and private sectors. Organisations sending past participants include UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development Bank (AfDB), UN Development Programme (UNDP), Practical Action Nepal, Australian Outback Communities Authority, DAI, and many more.
