The forest sector has a great potential to generate jobs and income, support livelihoods and contribute to rural development by supplying goods and maintaining forest ecosystem services. The forest sector is expected to play an important role in the emerging green economy in the pan-European region. The transition to a greener economy offers opportunities for economic prosperity, environmental protection and social inclusion, and can contribute to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. FOREST EUROPE, UNECE and FAO jointly organize the workshop “Promoting Green Jobs in the Forest Sector”, which is held in the broader framework of the ongoing efforts to enhance contribution of the forest sector to green economy in line with the Madrid Minis-terial Resolution 1 and Rovaniemi Action Plan.  The workshop constitutes a partner event of the EU Green Week 2017 that will focus on how EU environ-mental policies are creating green jobs and contribut-ing to economic, sustainable and socially responsible growth.

Goals and objectives

The main purpose of the workshop is to share lessons learned and stimulate discussions among relevant partners within and outside the forest sector on the promotion of green jobs and the development of new skills for the forest sector, while supporting sustainable development and the transition towards a green economy.

Target groups

The workshop is open to all signatories of and observers to FOREST EUROPE as well as members of and observers to UNECE and FAO, including the private sector. Experts from government agencies from all relevant sectors, including employment and education, research and academia, forest management organizations, civil society and industry are also welcome to attend.

Programme

During the first day of the workshop, experts representing relevant international organisations and governments will provide their insights and present examples of new jobs in the forest sector to set the scene for the parallel sessions. The second day will consist of parallel working groups, engaging participants in a dynamic dialogue, which is expected to result in the elaboration of recommendations for the promotion of green jobs in the forest sector. The workshop will be conducted in English with interpretation into Russian. The deadline for registration is 20 June 2017. To learn more, visit the website.
