GO4SDGs is promoting sustainable tourism in central asia to reduce plastics, food waste and ensure transition to a low-carbon economy

Objectives

  • Advance the capacity of large accommodation providers in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution through adopting and implementing regional eco-certification standard in Central Asia.

  • Establish strong national regulatory and policy frameworks to ensure compliance and continuous improvement in line with sustainable tourism principles and regional needs.

  • Build capacity of hotel chains and large properties to reduce plastic and food waste and promote low-carbon practices in hospitality sector of the region.

  • Promote countries’ accession to UNEP/UN Tourism Global Tourism Plastics Initiative and Glasgow Declaration of Climate Action in Tourism and implementation of 2024 UNGA Resolution (78/260), which proclaimed 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism at the initiative of the Government of Uzbekistan, Central Asia.

  1. Kick off Regional Working Group Meeting 1: 21 August

          Title: Raising regional ambition for sustainable tourism through harmonized eco-certification standard for Central Asia

         Objectives

  • Increase commitment by Central Asian countries to implement eco-certification standard. Identify two pilot large accommodation providers per country to lead the implementation of eco-certification standard in the region.
  • Support monitoring of the eco-certification standard implementation through incorporated training of assessors and auditors

  1. Four National Workshops: 3 – 23 August        

         Title: Introducing Sustainable Tourism Principles in the National Frameworks

         Objectives

  • Build national capacity to help align national frameworks with the regional eco-certification standard to respond to national priorities and regional needs in tourism sector.
  • Engage stakeholders, identify local priorities, and develop action plans tailored to each country's unique context.
  • Promote the countries’ accession to UNEP/UN Tourism Global Tourism Plastics Initiative and Glasgow Declaration of Climate Action in Tourism.

  1. Regional Webinar 2:  7 October

         Title: Building Capacity for Plastic and Food Waste Reduction for Tourism Sector of Central Asia

         Objectives

  • Inspire action, by discussing success factors and lessons learned to replicate Recipe of Change in the region of Central Asia.
  • Foster peer-to-peer learning on effective plastic and food waste reduction strategies.
  • Develop recommendations, targeting next steps and mapping tasks and responsibilities of each player in the sector.

     

  1. Regional Webinar 3: 25 October

         Title: From Lessons to Action: Progress of Sustainable Tourism Reform in Central Asia

         Objectives

  • Present achieved results and progress on introducing harmonized eco-standard in Central Asia
  • Develop a detailed action plan for the continued implementation of eco-certification standard in the region.
  • Outline strategies for scaling successful initiatives and integrating them into national and regional tourism policies.
