This consultation period has now closed.

The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to the climate and ecological crisis. It is nature intensive, reliant on fossil fuels, polluting throughout its value chain and wasteful to the extreme. It is also predicated on a culture of overproduction and consumption, and facilitated by an underpaid workforce facing discrimination, unsafe working conditions and harassment. (Read more about GO4SDGs and UNEPs activities to achieve a sustainable fashion value chain.)

Together with the non-profit organization Global Fashion Agenda, UNEP has launched the Fashion Industry Target Consultation. This consultation comprises of an online survey (which closed on 10 February 2023), and a series of regional workshops, which UNEP held together with GO4SDGs. The consultation was on a proposed set of unified targets for a sustainable fashion industry.

The targets cover five priority areas:
•    Respectful and secure work environments,
•    Better wage systems,
•    Resource stewardship,
•    Smart material choices, and
•    Circular systems.

Everyone working or interested in sustainable fashion is invited to participate in this Online Survey, especially in developing countries, before the online consultation closes on 10 February 2023. This will take around 20 minutes of your time. It will help us to understand if the proposed targets will help achieve the priority areas, if the level of ambition is correct, and what you would need to achieve the targets.

Besides the Online Survey regional UNEP/GO4SDGs-hosted workshops will be held in January and February in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean and West Asia, as part of the Consultation.
