High-Level Workshop on Different Visions, Approaches, Models, and Tools to Achieve Environmental Sustainability in the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication

Location :
Nairobi, Kenya

On Monday 23 May 2016, during the second session of the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA-2), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of China, will organize a high-level workshop which will explore different approaches, visions, and tools that Member States are putting into place as they work towards sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Background

In 2013, the UNEP Governing Council (GC) called upon UNEP to collect information about the different approaches, visions, models, and tools used by various member states to work towards sustainable development and poverty eradication, and to facilitate the sharing of this information amongst countries (UNEP GC Decision 27/8). In 2014, the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) followed up on this request by adopting Resolution 1/10, which asked UNEP to report on the information collected in response to GC Decision 27/8, and to consider organizing a workshop at the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly at which different approaches, visions, models and tools for achieving sustainable development could be discussed.

Event Objective

The purpose of the workshop is to facilitate the sharing of information about the multiplicity of approaches, visions, models and tools that countries use to work towards sustainable development. By highlighting the richness and diversity of sustainable development concepts, the workshop will provide examples of how other countries can address similar economic, environmental, and social challenges. While each approach reflects its own unique context and offers different tools for achieving sustainable development, they are united in that they all expand the definitions of progress and development. All of the approaches share a view of sustainable development as much more than simply economic growth in the traditional sense, and they all place paramount importance on increased well-being, social equity, sustainable consumption, and the health of the environment.
