Forests, their sustainable management and use of resources are key to combating climate change and to contributing to the prosperity and well-being of current and future generations. Forests also play a crucial role in poverty alleviation and in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. The theme of this year’s event, chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests, is “Forests and Biodiversity”.
On each International Day of Forests, communities around the world are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, including:
- Organizing or joining events celebrating forests: tree plantings, symposiums, art exhibitions, photo competitions or hosting a student debate
- Sharing the logo, banner and posters (available in 13 languages)
- Joining the conversation on social media using the #IntlForestDay hashtag
