On 22 February 2021, The launch of the Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency (GACERE) brought together governments, international organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen global cooperation on the circular economy, resource efficiency, and sustainable consumption and production.
The Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency (GACERE) was launched as a collaborative initiative to promote a global transition towards more circular, resource-efficient and sustainable economies.
The event brought together governments, international organisations, regional alliances and other stakeholders to discuss the role of GACERE in advancing the circular economy transition, resource efficiency, and sustainable consumption and production. The Alliance was established by the European Commission on behalf of the European Union (EU), together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in coordination with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Building on existing international initiatives and cooperation with regional alliances, including the African Circular Economy Alliance and the Regional Coalition on Circular Economy of Latin America and the Caribbean, GACERE aimed to support more efficient and equitable use of resources, sustainable consumption and production, and inclusive and sustainable industrialisation.
The side event was hosted by

- Inger Andersen, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director; and
- LI Yong, UNIDO Director-General.
Ministers from GACERE member countries and other stakeholders shared perspectives on the Alliance's role in supporting a just transition towards circular and resource-efficient economies and contributing to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
