On 24-26 October 2018 the City of Freiburg, the City of Basel and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability are hosting The Local Renewables Conference 2018, taking place in Freiburg, Germany and Basel, Switzerland.
The conference will discuss how to develop local and regional strategies to manage the transformation from a linear to a circular economy, the opportunities and limitations of sector integration, as well as financing mechanisms, and the role of social innovation and citizen engagement. Particular by putting emphasis on the importance of having cities and regions at the centre in making energy more secure, affordable and sustainable, and on the growing need to transform from a linear to a circular economy to take full advantage of renewable resources. The conference will address the following key issues:
- How can we ensure that global energy goals, including the 2015 Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals will be reached?
- What is the potential of the circularity of local renewables?
- What transformation is needed in cities for shifting to a circular economy? And how will circular economy shape transformation?
- How can we manage the transformation from a linear to a circular economy?
- What investments are needed and what are the financing options?
- How can relevant stakeholders, such as citizens, public authorities and the private sector be engaged in the urban transformation?
Organised by the City of Freiburg, the City of Basel, and ICLEI, the conference will be interactive and engaging, featuring an interesting variety of panels, topic-specific workshops and study tours in Freiburg and Basel. This event is part of a conference series launched in 2007 and explores the different sources of local renewable solutions in order to promote sustainability at a regional and local level.
