Mainstreaming Ecosystem Services Into Country’s Sectoral And Macroeconomic Policies And Programmes

TO
Location :
Palace of Nations, Geneva, Switzerland

Final Workshop

The need to integrate ecosystem service assessment findings and development policies to ensure stronger linkages between macroeconomic, economic growth and poverty alleviation has been expressed during the last recent years. The focus on developing analytical framework and adopting tools and methods for decision and policy-makers to assist in mainstreaming ecosystem management approaches into development and poverty alleviation policies with close involvement of national and local stakeholders has been pursued in a series of countries.

In this context, the Ecosystem Services Economics (ESE) Unit of the Division of Environmental Policy Implementation of UNEP, in collaboration with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), Kazakhstan, the Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, and the University of Minnesota, USA, have implemented for the past two years a United Nations Development Account 8th Tranchefunded project entitled, “Mainstreaming ecosystem services into country’s sectoral and macroeconomic policies and programmes ” in two vibrant and fast growing economies of Kazakhstan in Central Asia and Morocco in North West Africa. The project developed a tool for mainstreaming ecosystem service valuation that helps understand (and measure) the impact of policies on natural asset wealth, and illustrates how to use the tool and interpret the results. The final workshop of this project is being convened by UNEP from 23 to 24 February 2016 at the Palace of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Objectives

The specific objectives of the workshop are as follows:
1) Share and evaluate findings from both countries (Kazakhstan and Morocco)
2) Discuss and agree the strategy for the up scaling of the study
3) Synthesize lessons learnt and challenges in policy uptake
4) Identify opportunities/follow-up plans in the larger backdrop of the SDGs

Target
