The Politics of a Green Economy in the Global South

The University of Münster, in partnership with the German Development Institute, is hosting a workshop as part of their project on "The Politics of a Green Economy in the Global South". The project, which will run from 2015-2018, brings together a network of scholars and practitioners with expertise across different geographical regions and sectors to elucidate the conditions under which states take administrative and policy steps towards transformative socio-ecological change - also again the odds of e.g. challenging economic circumstances, limited capactities for formulating and implementing policies and not being in the spotlight of transnational civil society organisations.

In particular, the research program, and this first workshop aim to shed light on the following questions:

  • Why do some countries make more progress on the way towards a green economy than others?
  • What is the role of international and domestic actors in these developments? What kinds of support and critique come up in these processes?
  • Do trade-offs and tensions occure between the economic, ecological and social dimensions of a green economy approach as well as within single sectors (e.g. between climate change and biodiversity related policy instruments)? How are they responded to and with which consequences?

Participation in the workshop is by invitation only. A preliminary agenda can be downloaded here.
