SIDS Pathway to a Green Economy

Location :
Apia, Samoa

The side event, 'Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Pathway to a Green Economy' is being held at the 3rd SIDS International Conference by UNEP, in partnership with ESCAP, UNFCCC, PIDF and SPREP.

The event will focus on the unique case of SIDS transitioning to an inclusive Green Economy, highlighting specific initiatives and experiences of SIDS and formulating concrete recommendations for action.

SIDS are seeking to elaborate their own sustainable development models. The Barbados Outcome document mentions Green Economy as one instrument that is available to SIDS to enhance policy-making in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. UNEP published a book entitled “SIDS-based Green Economy – Analysis of Challenges and Opportunities” reviewing Green Economy approaches in the Small-scale Fisheries and Aquaculture, Tourism, Water, Energy and Waste sectors. In assisting SIDS develop their own Green Economy approaches, UNEP, as the secretariat of the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (10 YFP), has begun to develop a SIDS Platform under the 10 YFP, and other partnerships all of which would contribute to the member states to identify and realize their own pathways to Green Economy. The side event will present good practices and initiatives of SIDS on Green Economy, will highlight available partnerships to promote Green Economy approaches, and will prepare recommendations for the way forward.
