Worldwide, millions of small business jobs have been lost because of the COVID-19 crisis.

There are two ways to respond to the COVID-19 crisis: economic revitalization that supports sustainability, or trading one crisis for another. Reigniting the economy, securing jobs and saving businesses requires solutions that avoid the false trade-off between environmental protection and economic activity. This opinion paper discusses the likely effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on industry and the economy, which in the SSA context, has the potential of putting people’s lives at equal risk as contracting the virus. This report proposes a path forward – with a bold economic renewal plan that would sustain jobs for more than 9 million people every year for the next 10 years while building an economy that fosters cleaner air and water, higher wages, healthier communities, greater equity, and a more stable climate.
