Climate change impacts greatly affect ecosystems and, together with land-use change, pollution and unsustainable natural resource exploitation, are among the main drivers of biodiversity loss. In turn, gender-responsive and conflict-sensitive actions to protect, conserve, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems and biodiversity can help people and communities mitigate and adapt to climate change and increase ecosystem resilience.
Nature-based Solutions for adaptation (NbS for adaptation) specifically focus on using natural ecosystems to strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems to climate change impacts. This approach involves evaluating how climate change affects ecosystems and people and identifying how ecosystems can mitigate these impacts.
IISD's Nature for Climate Adaptation Initiative (NCAI) aims to enhance civil society organizations’ capacity to implement nature-based climate solutions (NBCS) for adaptation that provide biodiversity and livelihood benefits to people of all genders and social groups in developing countries.
