General Guidance on POPs Inventory Development

General Guidance on POPs Inventory Development

Preparing an inventory that gives a full picture of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in a country requires use of various sources and data collection methods. The purpose of this guidance document is to provide a general introduction to the inventory approach used in the detailed inventory guidance, which the Stockholm Convention Secretariat has developed to assist countries in making inventories for certain POPs. It is also intended to assist parties in developing inventories for POPs for which a detailed guidance document is not available. The detailed inventory guidance documents should be used in conjunction with this document.

This document is useful for:

  • Official contact points and national focal points of parties to the Stockholm Convention
  • Members of national steering committees or coordinating bodies for developing and updating NIPs (coordination units) and their different task teams
  • Stakeholders from government, the private sector, civil society and the general public participating in any of the phases of NIPs preparation, review and updating

This document is presented in English; translation to other UN languages is available here.

As part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led “Global Development, Review and Update of NIPs under the Stockholm Convention on POPs” project, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is executing Component 4, focused on disseminating information, managing knowledge and coordinating with the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to provide accessible, integrated tools and resources for all Parties.
