General Technical Guidelines on the Environmentally Sound Management of Wastes Consisting of, Containing or Contaminated with Persistent Organic Pollutants

These technical guidelines provide overarching guidance on the environmentally sound management (ESM) of wastes consisting of, containing, or contaminated with persistent organic pollutants (POPs), complementing guidelines for individual POPs. 

They outline relevant provisions of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions and address low POP content, destruction and irreversible transformation levels, and environmentally sound disposal methods. 

The guidelines cover the full waste management process, from regulatory frameworks, prevention and inventories to handling, transport, storage, disposal, site remediation, health and safety, emergency response and public participation.
