Guidance on best available techniques and best environmental practices relevant to short chain chlorinated paraffins listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants

UNEP-POPS-BATBEP-GUID-SCCPs-202412.En

This guidance outlines Best Available Techniques (BAT) and Best Environmental Practices (BEP) for managing Short-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (SCCPs) across their life cycle, from use to disposal.

Although exempted uses ended in December 2023, SCCPs in long-lived products will continue entering waste streams for years. It also emphasizes effective identification, separation and environmentally sound management of SCCP-containing materials to reduce risks.

The guidance combines general BAT/BEP principles with practical measures, including alternatives and considerations for recovery and recycling in key material flows such as plastics, rubber, mechanical parts and electronics.
