Guidance for the Control of the Import and Export of POPs under the Stockholm Convention

cover page

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from chemicals that remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically, accumulate in the fatty tissue of humans and wildlife, and have harmful impacts on human health or on the environment

This guidance document is intended to help parties to the convention to understand and implement their obligations to control of import and exports. It aims to address the chemicals initially listed in Annexes A, B and C to the convention, whether as chemicals or contained in mixtures and/or in articles. Effective import and export control of these chemicals also contributes to preventing illegal trade in POPs.

The target audience is national focal points of the convention, policymakers and government officials, including customs officials, involved in their national implementation plan (NIP) review and update process.
