Guidelines on best available techniques and guidance on best environmental practices relevant to Article 5 and Annex C of the Stockholm Convention

This document provides guidance to the Parties of Stockholm Convention to minimise their releases of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from unintentional production referred in paragraph c) of Article 5 of the convention for the main identified processes and technologies.

Section I introduces the purpose, structure, Article 5 and Annex C of the Stockholm Convention, and linkages to the Basel Convention and other environmental concerns. Section II discusses the consideration of alternatives in applying BAT. Section III presents BAT and BEP with guidance, general principles and cross-cutting considerations. Section IV compiles summaries of source categories from Sections V and VI. Sections V and VI provide detailed guidance on source categories in Part II and Part III of Annex C each, covering waste incineration, metallurgical processes, chemical production and other industrial activities.

As part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led “Global Development, Review and Update of NIPs under the Stockholm Convention on POPs” project, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is executing Component 4, focused on disseminating information, managing knowledge and coordinating with the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to provide accessible, integrated tools and resources for all Parties.
