Guidelines on Best Available Techniques and Provisional Guidance on Best Environmental Practices Relevant to Article 5 and Annex C

Guidelines on best available techniques and provisional guidance on best environmental practices relevant to Article 5 and Annex C

This documents aims to guide Parties under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in promoting and implementing best available techniques (BAT) and best environmental practices (BEP) to minimize and prevent the release of harmful chemicals listed in Annex C.

These chemicals, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), pose significant risks due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and ability to undergo long-range environmental transport. The guidance provides a comprehensive structure for applying BAT and BEP, including process descriptions, performance measures, and case studies specific to source categories in Parts II and III of Annex C.

As part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led “Global Development, Review and Update of NIPs under the Stockholm Convention on POPs” project, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is executing Component 4, focused on disseminating information, managing knowledge and coordinating with the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to provide accessible, integrated tools and resources for all Parties.
