This document intends to guide countries in the process of reviewing and updating their national implementation plans (NIPs) for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). The goal is to introduce readers to the documents already available for the review and updating of NIPs and assist parties in complying with the obligations to the Stockholm Convention. It also explains each step of the process in accordance with the following guidelines adopted by the Conference of the Parties:
- Guidance for developing national implementation plans for the Stockholm Convention (UNEP/POPS/COP.2/INF/7)
- Guidance for the review and updating of national implementation plans (Annex to decision SC‐1/12)
- Elaborated process of reviewing and updating national implementation plans (Annex to decision SC‐2/7)
This document is useful for:
- Official Contact Points and National Focal Points of Parties for the Stockholm Convention
- Members of national steering committees or coordinating bodies for developing and updating NIPs (coordination units) and their different task teams
- Stakeholders from government, the private sector, civil society and the general public, participating in any of the phases of NIPs preparation, review and updating.

As part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led “Global Development, Review and Update of NIPs under the Stockholm Convention on POPs” project, the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) is executing Component 4, focused on disseminating information, managing knowledge and coordinating with the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to provide accessible, integrated tools and resources for all Parties.
