The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. 

The position is located in the Economic and Trade Policy Unit of the Economy Division at the Geneva Duty Station. Under the Chief's supervision, the Head of the Economic and Trade Policy Unit will lead the formulation and implementation of the Branch's substantive work programme under his/her direct responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop UNEP's analytical, outreach and advocacy efforts on economic and trade policy as key drivers of environmental sustainability
  • Lead UNEP's work on public finance and fiscal policy, including outreach to major international financial institutions and multilateral development banks for the purpose of directing financing into transitioning high-impact sectors of the economy
  • Fulfil management and administrative aspects
  • Advise Branch Chief, Division Director and Senior Management and develop strategies and policies with regard to the substantive work programmes under his/her responsibility

Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree (Master's or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in economics with preference to environmental economics or international economics or a related field is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible professional work experience involving policy analysis, of which eight years should be at the international level is required.
  • Experience in areas of environmental economics and development policy. 
  • A track record of relevant publications is desirable.
  • Oral and written fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.
