Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This post is located in the Communication Division, at the Nairobi duty station. The incumbent will lead and coordinate communication for both the upcoming United Nations Environment Assembly and the Stockholm+50 meeting, liaising closely with the lead organizers for both events. He/she will work in close coordination with colleagues in UNEP’s Communication Division as well as from across UNEP and partner organizations and will be responsible for the effective and efficient performance required of the position.

Under the supervision of the Communication Director, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Takes the lead in strategy, planning, development and coordination of communication and advocacy for the two events; where appropriate, works with departments, funds and agencies to develop ways to implement campaigns and to incorporate event messages and themes into relevant activities and products.
  • Provides advice and expertise to managers, senior officers and other public information staff on a range of public affairs issues, methods, and approaches; anticipates and resolves communications/public relations issues/problems.
  • Develops strategic partnerships with key constituencies to elicit support for and maximize impact of promotional objective.
  • Prepares or oversees preparation of a diverse range of information communications products in support of event initiatives.
  • Evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the UN.
  • Organizes media coverage and arranges for media contacts, briefings, interviews; organizes seminars, lectures, conferences, public events on major issues and events concerning the organization.
  • Builds information networks; plans and oversees maintenance of publicly accessible information materials on the events; plans and develops outreach activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, the environment, sciences, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

 

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in communication, journalism or a related area is required.
Experience focused on the environment is desirable.
Experience leading communication for major events is desirable.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

 

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
