Introduction to National Implementation Plans (NIPs)

NIPs

The Stockholm Convention requires parties to develop a National Implementation Plan (NIP) to guide national regulation and legislation, decision-making and effective actions to address persistent organic pollutants (POPs) throughout the supply chain and their lifecycle

This video provides a brief introduction to these NIPs, which are dynamic documents that encompasses strategy, processes and actionable steps. Their primary purpose are to clarify the presence and influence of POPs at the national level, ensure continual progress in eliminating POPs, foster collaboration and synergy among relevant stakeholders, and facilitate access to financial resources.

To create an NIP, participating parties need to establish a coordination mechanism, create inventories of POPs, set objectives, and formulate action plans that address the prioritized environmental impacts of POPs within their specific country. Subsequently, parties should finalize their NIP drafts and obtain endorsements from national stakeholders and governments before submitting them to the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention. The development and implementation of these plans serve as a practical roadmap, guiding and facilitating effective actions to address POPs.
