Global efforts to mitigate climate change are focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy. At the same time, the world needs to pay more attention to material efficiency, otherwise it will be almost impossible and much more expensive to keep global warming below 1.5°C.
According to a study by the International Resource Panel (IRP), about a quarter of global GHG emissions are attributable to material production. This corresponds to the share of GHG emissions from agriculture, forestry and land use change combined.
This video shows a good practice example from a building and construction materials company in Indonesia to illustrate how the implementation of different material efficiency strategies can help reduce carbon emissions.
