The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) has released the first issue of the EAERE Magazine — an outlet for new research, projects, and other professional news, featuring articles that can contribute to recent policy discussions and developments in the field of environmental and natural resource economics. It will be published quarterly in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
This issue reports on new advances in environmental economics with articles focused on the consequences of climate change and mitigation efforts at the national and individual level. Anouch Missirian and Wolfram Schlenker (both Columbia University, New York) write about the effects of temperature and precipitation fluctuations on migration to the European Union (EU). James Rising (Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics) covers new research on the social cost of carbon and the importance of higher resolution climate projections. Mads Greaker (winner of the 2017 Erik Kempe Award, Oslo Metropolitan University) writes about the support of electric vehicles in Norway and the EU and how they could help to reach the targets made under the Paris Agreement. Martin Kesternich (Centre for European Economic Research, Mannheim) looks at mitigation efforts at the individual level and presents research on people’s willingness to pay for carbon offsetting. Sandra Paulsen (Institute for Applied Economic Research, Brasília) discusses environmental economics in Brazil and the development and progress of the Instituto Escolhas.
The magazine also includes a feature designed to support intergenerational exchange within EAERE, which could be described as “juniors-ask-big-shot.” Sir Partha Dasgupta will be the first interviewee in this new series, answering questions submitted by PhD students and postdocs in Germany and the UK.
The contents of the Magazine will be disseminated via social media to reach a broader audience. EAERE is active on social networks (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram). Those interested in the latest developments in enviroenmental economics are invited to follow EAERE for updates on the Association’s initiatives and services, as well as information on relevant events, policy news, technological innovations, schools and conferences, job openings, etc.
EAERE has also created a new monthly newsletter, EAERE Highlights, to provide updates and announcements on news, events and conferences, open job positions, and educational programs to the EAERE community. Information submitted by members to the website is further disseminated through the monthly newsletter. This regular briefing will keep members well-informed on environmental and natural resource economic happenings in Europe.
