Stockholm+50 commemorates the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment and celebrates 50 years of global environmental action. To prepare for the international meeting, five regional multi-stakeholder consultations have been organized by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and the Initiative Global Opportunities for Sustainable Development Goals (GO4SDGs). Participants represented a diversity of stakeholders, including youth, women, Indigenous Peoples, NGOs, the private sector, governments, and UN Agencies, among others, who came together to reflect on and review how to accelerate action to achieve sustainable development and to prepare regional key messages to take forward to the Stockholm+50 Meeting.
Adriana: " The consultations brought almost 2,000 different voices and perspectives to the table, also from Indigenous Peoples and women leaders. They all shared their energy and optimism, as 70% trust that their country can take bold decisions to achieve a better planet.”
Our key messages from the regional consultations:
- Adopt new metrics beyond GDP
- Mainstream Indigenous Knowledge and Rights as part of the solution for a healthy planet
- Need for new narratives and paradigms offering positive and feasible visions of the future
- Criminalize ‘ecocide’ and protect lives of the environmental defenders
- Rebuild trust among governments and stakeholders
- Steer investments towards green sectors and green jobs and skills to advance a just transition
- Private sector ‘responsibility’ and inclusion of SMES
- Green jobs and skills for youth and vulnerable groups
- Adopt SCP and Circularity in value chains and NbS
- Finance Sustainability
Adriana: “I would love to have the opportunity to continue these consultations with strategic partners to identify synergies, connect the dots and develop partnerships to scale up action. This is in fact, the main objective of GO4SDGs."
Following-up the key messages of the regional consultations, GO4SDGs is bringing 5 new partnerships and initiatives to Stockholm+50:
