Research Highlights from the Fourth GGKP Annual Conference - Q&A with Eduardo Bianchi

Knowledge news

The Fourth Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) Annual Conference will focus on the theme of “Transforming Development through Inclusive Green Growth” during 6-7 September 2016 at the International Convention Center on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea.

Eduardo Bianchi will be presenting his paper "The Greening of the Dairy Value Chain in Argentina" at the Fourth GGKP Annual Conference during the session on "Inclusive Business Models: Greening Industry and Value Chains".

1. Briefly describe the topic and conclusion of your paper.

Our paper "The Greening of the Dairy Value Chain in Argentina" analyzes the environmental impacts of the main components of the dairy value chain in Argentina and describes the greening actions that have been already taken or should be adopted. We find that the primary production link is which generates the highest environmental impacts, but green reforms are difficult to implement due to its structure and the requirement of investments and training. We also find that big companies in the industrial link of the chain are taking green actions, following different business strategies.

2. Through your research, what do you find as the role for inclusiveness in the transition to a green economy?

Our research points out that a large group of small companies exist in the dairy value chain that do not have the resources and the information to green their production. Since they have a significant place in job creation, they play an important role in promoting green and inclusive growth.

3. What are the key policy implications of your research?

Our study suggests that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the dairy value chain and their relation with environmental issues must be in the policy agenda. Here there is a need for government policies in order to compensate the lack of resources, skills and management capabilities to implement both adaptation and mitigation policies.

4. What do you hope to gain from the Fourth GGKP Annual Conference?

I think that the GGKP Annual Conference is a stimulating place for us to present our research, get important comments and insights to improve it and, finally, to have the opportunity of meeting with and learning from other researchers from around the world.

5. Which session at the conference are you interested in attending and why?

I am especially interested in attending the sessions dealing with economic, inclusive and green growth and those dealing with the nexus of poverty, industry and value chains, and informal economy and small-scale actors. I think that all the panels will be very interesting.

6. What are the next steps for your research?

The next steps in my research will be related with the possibilities and challenges of achieving green growth with social inclusion in Latin America, with a focus in the nexus between these issues, climate change and food security in the region.
