Private sector development in the context of climate change has been increasingly emphasised in international financing institutions during the past years. It is widely recognized that the private sector needs to engage in climate financing.
NDF has collaborated closely with the Inter-American Development Bank Group on several initiatives relating to innovative climate financing mechanisms. These include among others two initiatives with the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), namely the EcoMicro program, which is supporting green credit lines and development of green financing products in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as the ProAdapt which is an innovative program for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in climate change and adaptation. It will assist MSMEs in adapting their businesses to climate change and to help them identify business opportunities for climate change. Other initiatives include the GreenPYME, in which the main objective is to scale up energy efficiency measures and investments in small and medium-sized companies through i.a. energy audits. The program is co-financed together with the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC). Energy Efficiency Guarantee Facility is a risk sharing instrument between the IDB and NDF in form of first loss guarantees. This risk financing will leverage a total of USD 50 million as loans from the IDB to energy efficiency projects which otherwise would not have been able to receive financing from the IDB.
These initiatives and activities have attracted interest among the climate and development finance practitioners. Therefore, in order to share experiences and lessons learned from these initiatives, NDF will host a seminar on 4-5 November, 2013 in Helsinki. The seminar will most importantly seek to transfer knowledge from IDB Group climate finance projects to other NDF partners from Africa and Asia, as well as to Nordic financing partners.
The first day of the program will include discussion on innovative climate financing through presentations and case studies. Working group sessions will be arranged on the second day. These sessions will enable interested participants to use the lessons learned for tailoring activities in their own regions and institutions.
