African Development Bank (AfDB)

Founded in 1964, the mission of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group is to assist its Regional Member Countries to achieve sustainable socio-economic development. The AfDB’s headquarters are in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, with five regional offices, and country offices in 35 African countries. Its mission is to promote the investment of public and private capital in projects and programmes that are likely to contribute to the economic development of its stakeholders.

It achieves its objectives by:

  • Mobilizing and allocating resources for investment in regional member countries
  • Providing policy advice and technical assistance to support development efforts

Among the 81 member countries, 54 are regional ones. Due to the growing demand for investments from African countries and because of the Bank’s limited financial resources, membership was opened to 27 non-regional countries. The bank is comprised of three entities: the African Development Bank (ADB), African Development Fund (ADF) and the Nigerian Trust Fund (NTF).
