Bjarne Steffen is Assistant Professor of Climate Finance and Policy at ETH Zürich and the head of CFP. In his research, which is published in high impact journals, he analyzes policies related to the low-carbon transition in the energy and financial sectors. To this end, he works at the intersection of energy economics, financial economics, and innovation studies. His research covers both developed and developing countries. Current projects on developed countries address the impact of public policy on technology pathways for energy storage, and the effect of incorporating technology- and country-specific cost of capital into energy system models. Current projects on developing countries address clean energy technology diffusion, and the role of multilateral development banks.
Before founding CFP, Bjarne was a senior researcher at ETH Zurich’s Energy Politics Group (EPG), where he was part of the EU Horizon 2020 project INNOPATHS (Innovation Pathways, Strategies and Policies for the Low-Carbon Transition in Europe) and the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research. In 2019, he was a visiting scholar with at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology’s MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research. Before, Bjarne worked as Principal in the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) energy and infrastructure practices and was project manager for the Strategic Infrastructure Initiative at the World Economic Forum. He studied economics at University of Mannheim and the University of California at Berkeley, and holds a PhD in energy economics from University of Duisburg-Essen (chair Prof. Weber).
