Derek Eaton PhD is an economist, specializing in natural capital and sustainability and climate change, with more than 20 years of experience in research and advisory services in a wide range of countries and regions, for both public and private sector clients. He is a Senior Fellow of the Luc Hoffmann Institute. Derek was previously Vice President Research at the Global Footprint Network, leading analytics on resource accounting and related metrics to support policy and sustainability solutions. From 2012 to 2015, he was Executive Director of the Centre for International Environmental Studies at the Graduate Institute, Geneva where he managed research on trade-offs and synergies between food security and biodiversity management. Derek was a core member of UNEP’s Green Economy team, overseeing the integrated modelling assessment in UNEP’s 2011 flagship report, “Towards a Green Economy.” He holds degrees in economics from Wageningen University, University College London and the University of Toronto. Derek has also worked for Wageningen Economic Research, the Canadian International Development Agency (now Global Affairs Canada), and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).
