Kurt Lonsway is an experienced engineer, currently serving as the division manager for Environment and Climate at the African Development Bank (AfDB). He works with a team of environmental, social, climate change, renewable energy and green growth specialists working with Bank operations in energy, water and sanitation, transportation, ICT and the private sector. He manages a portfolio of $3bn of climate finance initiatives on behalf of the Bank including the Climate Investment Funds, the Global Environment Facility, the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, and the Africa Climate Change Fund. His division also leads the Bank’s work on Green Growth and hosts the secretariat of the Bank’s Climate Change Coordination Committee.
During his career at the AfDB, he previously served as the Manager for Environmental and Social Safeguards and Compliance. He also served as an Agriculture and Irrigation Specialist. Before the AfDB, he was Manager for the International Development Service team for Environmental Resources Management in Washington, DC and subsequently served as the Moscow Project Coordinator for a large oil and gas project in Siberia, Russia. He also served as Country Representative for the International Water Management Institute in Niger, West Africa. Mr. Lonsway has over 30 years of international work experience, primarily in Africa and Asia.
