
Niels Breyer has been the Executive Director for Germany, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Switzerland in the African Development Bank since 2020. He has been an official of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) since 1987, and has dealt with African affairs for most of his career. He headed the Central, West and also East Africa divisions in BMZ, and served as the coordinator to the G8 Africa Personal Representative to the Federal Chancellor, as well as working for the African Development Bank in earlier times. He gained on-the-ground experience in Somalia, Mozambique and recently in Nigeria where he led the German support programme to the ECOWAS Commission. For several years, he was also working on the MDGs as well as on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Niels Breyer is a development economist and has a background in banking.
