The European Commission defines nature-based solutions (NbS) as solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits help build resilience. Such solutions bring more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions.
The EC aims position the EU as a leader in innovating with nature to establish a more sustainable and resilient society. Different funding schemes, such as Horizon Europe or LIFE+ Climate Action, and projects like the Urban Nature Atlas support the Commission's objective in reaching more resilient societies.
