Efficient Lighting Initiative

Organisation :

The objective of this project for the large scale deployment of Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) is to support Bangladesh’s efforts to raise levels of social development and economic growth by increasing access to electricity, particularly in rural areas where both access and availability is low. This will be achieved by the reduction in overall demand for electricity in Bangladesh by introducing energy saving CFLs throughout the country. The introduction of CFLs on a large scale will reduce demand for electricity and decrease the use of fossil fuels. This will have a positive impact on local air quality by reducing pollutants generated by fossil fuel based power. Reduced electricity bills will increase disposable income. Since CFL bulbs last longer, it will also reduce household expenditure on purchasing lamps. In the short term, the deployment of CFLs on such a large scale aims to create employment opportunities, institutional development through the enhancement of program management skills and training, and increase local knowledge of energy efficiency.
