GGGI Côte d'Ivoire - NDC Partnership Economic Advisory Support

As part of the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, Côte d’Ivoire has joined several initiatives including the Partnership for the Implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) or NDC Partnership, in 2017.

Thus, Côte d’Ivoire, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, obtained technical support from the NDC Partnership in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), aiming to accompany the government in the formulation and implementation of development programs and policies taking into account the climate ambitions of Côte d’Ivoire. This support will allow Côte d’Ivoire to design a development strategy that integrates the national ambition in terms of climate in the short and long terms.

The project started in early 2021 with a meeting with key stakeholders related to sectors vulnerable to climate change and capable of carrying green projects.

A kick-off workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, which provides the institutional anchor for the project.

The status of Covid19 is also taken into account in the project. Thus, the first deliverables of the technical assistance will be the analyses of the impact of Covid19 on the key sectors of the economy, especially the green sectors. Next, deliverables on the integration of green growth concepts and green criteria will be developed. The one on the National Development Plan has already been finalized in view of the imminent publication of the document which will take place very soon.

A list of projects and programs with climate component(s) will be identified and catalogued in order to assist the government in discussions with donors for potential green financing. GGGI will effectively support these discussions and provide additional information where possible.

Objective:

The objective of the project is to integrate green growth into the programs and projects of Côte d’Ivoire. More specifically, it is to ensure that the documents that guide the country’s policy such as the National Development Plan or Public Investment Projects integrate the concepts and criteria of green growth. Ultimately, the goal is to enable Côte d’Ivoire to maintain its growth path while respecting its climate ambitions.

Outcome:

Policies approved mainstreaming green growth into the post Covid-19 recovery, including the next round of the PND.

Impact:

Côte d’Ivoire reduces emissions, increases accesses to sustainable services and increases green jobs.
