GGGI Cambodia - Green Urban Development Program

Recognizing that balanced urbanization is key for sustaining growth, reducing poverty and achieving upper middle-income status by 2030, the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) has identified the importance of investing in urban infrastructure and improving urban planning will be critical. GGGI is helping the RGC efforts to utilize green growth solutions to achieve economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner in the urban sector through the Green Urban Development Program. Developed and implemented in partnership with the National Council for Sustainable Development, the project is:

• Assessing green growth opportunities across sectors within the urban context
• Advising on the institutional reforms and national policies required for achieving improved development outcomes
• Providing technical assistance on integrating green growth into the planning processes of Cambodia’s cities
• Supporting the government with the design of bankable green infrastructure projects aimed at improving the livelihoods of Cambodia’s urban poor
• Developing a green city strategic plan for Phnom Penh that supports climate change adaptation, curbs emissions and enable the urban economy to develop as an engine of inclusive growth

The overall objectives of this project are to assist the development of green city projects across Cambodia, support city planning through diffusing green growth concepts and instruments and to generate bankable projects that result in climate change resilience and improved livelihoods for Cambodia’s urban poor.
