GGGI Lao PDR - Climate Modeling for Lao PDR

In Burkina Faso, the number of motor pumps is evaluated at 25 000 diesel pumps (90% used by small-scale farmers and 10% used by large scale producers). Almost all pumps are used in irrigated areas, with 46% of individually owned, 23% of shared pumps and 31% of the pumps, other forms of ownership such as hiring and borrowing without having to pay the owner among others. The main actors are small-scale farmers (individual or cooperative) and the pay for the diesel fuel, spare parts, maintenance. Moreover, the energy access has always been an issue hindering economic development. The energy sector is described by a high dependence on thermal generation with almost 89% (292MW) of the installed capacity (325MW). Energy demand is growing fast but Burkina Faso still present a low energy access rate (18%).

Objective : The project aims to support Burkina Faso having a more climate-resilient communities, Empowered women in Green Entrepreneurship, a more stable food supply, clean and energy-efficient alternative to diesel-run irrigation pumps, contributing to poverty reduction, new green jobs, improved nutrition and health, and reduced GHG emissions.

Outcome: Access to clean energy for the livelihood of vulnerable households is enabled through the provision of SIPS and its use by farmers living in the ecovillages.
