Recognizing the complexity of these challenges and the need for coordination at all levels, the Government of Mexico (GoM) has adopted the National Strategy on Climate Change (ENCC), and the Special Program on Climate Change Action (PECC), which together form the framework for Mexico’s approach to tackle climate change through actions by various government sectors. GGGI is supporting these efforts through the Subnational Green Growth Planning and Implementation project, which is being implemented in partnership with the Environmental Megalopolis Commission (CAMe) made up of the Federal District and the five adjacent states in and around Mexico City. The project is:
- Evaluating fiscal instruments to improve urban mobility and air quality
- Supporting the development of policies and the financial structures that will transform the public transit fleet
- Building institutional capacities that will help incentivize reductions in emissions and the use of private vehicles
The overall objectives of this project are to assist the CAMe in developing a set of green growth initiatives to push a green agenda on the region it covers and strengthen green growth planning capabilities at the sub-national level.
