South-South Cooperation in Mongolia and Central Asia Countries: Sharing Knowledge on Inclusive Green Economies and Ecological Civilization

This project supports Mongolia and Central Asian countries in developing research capacity on inclusive green economy (IGE) development in Central Asia. The participating countries share socio-economic challenges and environmental issues such as land degradation, water scarcity, energy inefficiency, and waste production, and by facilitating South-South Cooperation, this project promotes the sharing of good practices and methodologies to help countries embark on Green Economy trajectories.

The project consists of four components:

  • A six-week fellowship programme at Beijing Normal University, where selected researchers from Central Asian countries and Mongolia complete research projects related to green investment in the water sector. The programme includes workshops, lectures, seminars, and field visits.
  • A high-level policy roundtable on Green Economy pathways and the approach of Ecological Civilization that will bring together officials from participating governments, research institutions, and international organisations.
  • An expert workshop, at which policy makers, researchers, and green businesses will discuss green investment in the water sector in Central Asia and Mongolia.
  • A substantive summary report on green investment in the region, based on the discussions in the workshop and the research undertaken by the participants of the fellowship programme.

Priority sectors for green economy in the region identified in the report include water management, access to sustainable energy, agriculture and food security, waste management, transportation corridor/ road links as well as cross-sectoral effects that must be considered.
