Sustainable Natural Resources Management

Organisation :

The objectives of the GEF Biodiversity Conservation in Productive Forestry Landscapes Project for Argentina are to improve the sustainable and efficient management of forest resources, conserve biodiversity in protected areas and forest landscapes, and integrate small producers into forestry development and conservation. The project was approved by the Board on June 28, 2007. Effectiveness was delayed unexpectedly for 18 months due to new national procedures requiring a Presidential resolution before the grant could be countersigned. Shortly following effectiveness, the line agency was restructured, further impacting implementation, which continued to be slow through 2011. Since that time, however, implementation has improved and the project has made progress on all components and provides valuable experiences for replication. On June 5, 2013, the client requested and was granted a 18 month extension to make up for the initial setbacks and to complete the project objectives. On December 16, 2014, the client requested an extension of 12 months to undertake additional activities including creation of an environmental economics unit within the implementing agency expand the ongoing applied research program and provide additional time to fulfill project objectives. This will be a second extension and would result in a total extension period of 30 months. A reallocation of funds from between categories is also proposed as well as a revision and update of the project Results Framework. The project is blended with the IBRD Sustainable Natural Resource Management Project which was also extended and is expected to close in September 2015. This project is consistent with and directly supportive of the pillar on sustainable natural resources management of the recently approved Country Partnership Strategy for Argentina (September 2014).
