This Active Mobility brief provides ideas and resources for advancing non-motorised transport in South Africa. It looks at the case for active mobility, the drivers and obstacles, and summarises existing policy instruments that further the non-motorised transport agenda. It presents points to consider when planning active mobility facilities with women’s needs in mind. The brief uses case studies to highlight the lessons to be learnt and possibilities to consider. A resources section includes guidelines for planning and infrastructure, developing an active mobility policy or strategy, and tactical urbanism interventions.

The publication stems from the Green Economy Transformation project pursued in partnership by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) of the Republic of South Africa; the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) of the Federal Republic of Germany
