ASEAN and its member states have demonstrated strong commitment to climate action. Region-wide action has been increasing, especially around mitigation-aligned initiatives including renewable energy deployment and energy efficiency. Yet, emissions in the region are among the fastest growing in the world. Rising emissions are being driven in large part by the region’s dependence on fossil fuels; coal use is rising and projected to continue to rise over the next 20 years, in contrast to global trends.
This report discusses the region as a whole, cites global trends and makes recommendations as to how ASEAN may reach net zero in line with the global goal of stabilizing global temperature rise at 1.5 degrees. It highlights the region’s compelling green economy opportunities as well as the role of the international community in financing, technology and knowledge transfer.
The report draws from a variety of sources, including but not limited to the individual country analyses.
